Abstract
Innovation is often presented as being in the exclusive domain of the private sector. Yet despite the widespread perceptions of public sector inefficiency, government agencies have much to teach us about how advances occur. Improving governance on the municipal level is crucial to the future of the twenty-first century city, from environmental sustainability to economic development and equality, social inclusion, public health, and beyond. In this age of acceleration and massive migration of people into cities around the world, this presentation will discuss how innovation from within city administration is making urban systems smarter and shaping life in our cities.
We so often equate innovation with technological advancement and data analytics, but it is far broader. To challenge the notion of a tech-centric view of urban innovation, we need to look at cities and local governments more holistically. In this talk, André Corrêa d'Almeida will offer a multidisciplinary and integrated perspective of what it means to become a smarter city. Based on twelve case studies developed for New York City, he will lead a discussion about the forces and constraints behind urban innovations. André Corrêa d'Almeida will help us imagine new possibilities from within city administration. He will offer practical lessons on municipal innovation for city officials, urban planners, policy makers, civil society, and potential private sector partners around the world.
